LOVE IN SUPERMARKET

IGUAN Dance theatre, St.Petersburg (40 min.)

Initially, this performance was given in the shopping centres of Saint Petersburg arousing all sorts of emotions among the customers, shop assistants and security guards. It aimed at conducting a marketing research to find out what made people buy goods and how it influenced the relations between a man and a woman. It was an attempt to use theatrical experience in studying the social changes going on in our society in the age of consumer boom.

Intruding with their romantic dance duet into the retail spaces of supermarkets, Nina and Misha push the two universes together: love and utilitarianism. What is happening to the human soul in the time of market relations? And how do overconsumption and consumerism (the word Nina uses a lot) influence the romantic relations and understanding of love in general? Is it true that the meeting point for modern men and women is now a supermarket? As for the universal dependence on shopping, is it an indispensable condition for individual freedom, especially now, in a time of crisis? These are the questions that passionate Nina and Misha ask oneself sliding between the showcases and waving plastic bags.
